Secular Education in America: An Increasing Urgency

In the age of Coronavirus, it’s never been more obvious than right now how important an understanding of science is, both to policy decision-making and to the very way we live our lives as individuals. Yet too many children in America lack a basic education in secular subjects like science, despite it being mandated by law! Join Naftuli Moster, Executive Director of YAFFED: Young Advocates for Fair Education, to discuss the current efforts underway to improve educational curricula within ultra-Orthodox schools; Bertha Vazquez, Director of the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES), to learn about tools that middle school and elementary teachers need to effectively teach evolution and answer its critics; and Brandon Haught, Communications Director for Florida Citizens for Science and author of “Going Ape: Florida’s Battles Over Evolution in the Classroom.” Together with the Jews for a Secular Democracy (JFASD) team Sarah Levin, Lincoln Dow, and Paul Golin. This virtual event was hosted by Jews for a Secular Democracy on Friday, March 27, 2020.
