Is It Constitutional? You Be the Judge!

Join Jews for a Secular Democracy and NCJW Greater Miami for Is It Constitutional? You Be the Judge™! This webinar is an interactive and thought-provoking program from the National Council of Jewish Women’s You Be the Judge™ series and hosted by JFASD’s Florida initiative which is generously grant-sponsored by the Baugh Foundation.  While this program grows out of our Florida work, it will be relevant to people across the country, because the federal courts shape daily life nationwide and often have the final word on issues that affect our rights, freedoms, and democracy. Register here!

Together, we will explore the structure of the federal court system, how federal judges are nominated and appointed, and why it matters that the people serving in these lifetime seats are fair, knowledgeable, diverse, and committed to upholding the Constitution. We will also consider why the courts matter so much in protecting religious freedom and maintaining the separation of religion and government, especially at a time when these core constitutional principles are increasingly contested in public life.

Then, in the interactive portion of the program, participants will step into the role of judges and work through a real federal case themselves. After discussing the case and reaching a decision, participants will compare their ruling with the actual outcome. NCJW describes You Be the Judge™ as an interactive, flexible program in which participants use real constitutional rights cases to “put themselves in the judges’ shoes,” making the courts more accessible and showing why federal judges matter so much.
