Jews for a Secular Democracy Hosts Sold-Out Fundraiser
“Dana Nessel and Randi Weingarten joined JFASD leaders to discuss religious liberty, democracy and public education.
The driving imperative of Jews for a Secular Democracy (JFASD) is “there is no religious liberty without the separation of religion and government, and that religious freedom is not free.” On April 26, JFASD hosted a sold-out fundraiser to support its work.
“Jews for a Secular Democracy is Humanistic Judaism’s pluralistic social justice initiative, which seeks to bring diverse Jewish perspectives to the separation of church and state, and activate the Jewish community to defend First Amendment religious freedoms,” said Paul Golin, executive director of the Society for Humanistic Judaism and JFASD. “When I say Jews for a Secular Democracy is pluralistic, that means it includes the viewpoints of secular Humanistic Jews because it’s our initiative but also includes Jews from the religious denominations — Reconstructionist, Conservative, Reform, Orthodox — plus Jews of no affiliation, and our friends, family and allies.”
As a kickoff to the weekend, JFASD leaders joined the Kabbalat Shabbat service at the Congregation for Humanistic Judaism in Farmington Hills. A highlight of the evening was the awarding of the JFASD Constitutional Defender Award to Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a union of 1.8 million members.
